Prepping for your Photoshoot
While there’s no need to prepare for your photoshoot, there are absolutely things that you can do to get the most out of our time together. So let’s talk about them!
Up to 1 Week Before Shooting
The most important pre-shoot task is thinking strategically about what you want to accomplish with our time together. Spending just a little time feeling that out can pay off big time. I’d recommend:
Meditating on any specific shots that you know you’ll want or need for a particular purpose.
Considering any overall aesthetic preferences - I love receiving Pinterest inspiration boards from my clients because it helps me understand exactly what look you want to achieve! These can help us collaborate ahead of time and makes sure we get you those “must have” shots. You are not “bothering” me. I promise! I want to hear your thoughts!!
A Couple Days Before the Shoot
In the days before our shoot, you should be shifting your attention toward styling.
For Couples & Families: When selecting outfits, choose colors and prints that are harmonious with one another, and with the space we’re shooting. Try to avoid “matchy matchy” and instead think about a cohesive palette. (I love THIS SITE for palette browsing - the “coffee” palettes are my personal favorite).
You should be comfortable, and you should look like yourself, whatever the formality level of the shoot. Bright colors and loud prints can read really well on camera, but sometimes they are too much - so do not hesitate to run outfit options by your photographer! We absolutely want to have that conversation with you!
In general, textures are great and photograph really well, neutrals are tried and true, if you’re wearing a print select a large print (smaller prints can run) and don’t be afraid to have a little fun!
For Branding Shoots: I recommend bringing multiple outfits - especially if you plan to use the photos on social media. Outfit changes can help us avoid the appearance that all your photos were taken in one place at one time. We want you to be able to roll these out organically for months, even years to come. So bring 3-4 options.
The Night Before Shoot Day!
Get your beauty sleep! That is all. Avoiding alcohol and super salty/sugary food can help you dodge breakouts and puffiness! DO NOT starve yourself for a photoshoot. You’ll look tired and scary and you’ll be in a very bad mood and I will be very sad if you faint.
Shoot Day!
On shoot day we have two goals. We want you to look your best, and we want you to feel your best. So let’s tackle both.
Keep any hair and makeup simple and clean.
No need to pack on concealer for the camera. In fact, it takes me about 2 seconds to edit out a blemish, but it can take HOURS to smooth out and correct cakey over-packed makeup. If you’re normally a full-face-of-makeup person, stick with that! Be yourself! I just don’t recommend trying something really unusual on your shoot day. Be yourself and don’t worry about that blemish!
Posing can be scary.
But it’s your photographer’s job to help you with that. I will give you tons of direction. However. Here are my go-to poses to have in your back pocket when the “I don’t know what to do with my hands” panic sets in! When in doubt, gently touch your hair, your chin, your neck, your elbows and repeat. I promise, you’ll look fabulous <3
